Jess // Multi-Texture Style Icon
15 May 2012 | 8:26 pm*Prepared for BGLH by Meosha Tall of 1MeNaturally How would you describe your texture? J: If I had to pick a hair type, I would say my hair is a 4a/3c hybrid with a bit of 4b in the back. The back of my head boasts the tightest coils while the front has looser, more defined curls. I have a ton of hair, so it is really thick but the actual strands are fine. Because my hair is so soft, I feel like that makes it more prone to frizziness and it succumbs to any kind of heat without much resistance. My hair also takes an eternity and a half to air dry. Describe your styling regimen over the course… -

4 Ways to Make Straightened Natural Hair Last Longer
14 May 2012 | 10:05 amStyle Icon Leaira by Nicole Harmon of HairLiberty.org Summer is approaching and for many naturals, that means switching it up and trying out new styles. Straightened styles are an option but because heat styling should be used at a minimum, it’s important to get as much wear out of them as possible. Here are 4 ways to make your straightened styles last longer: 1. Use products that promise humidity protection The hair at your roots is usually the first to revert back to curly because it absorbs the most moisture whenever you sweat, take a hot shower, or go outside in humid weather. Review: Joico K-Pak Professional Cuticle Sealer
10 Apr 2012 | 8:30 amI’m all for enhancing what you’ve got. I do a ton of things to my hair to make it look and feel as good as possible. Two of the things I do on a regular basis are protein treatments and vinegar rinses. So when I found a product that would combine the two, I jumped all over it. I’m talking about Joico K-Pak Professional Cuticle Sealer. Joico K-Pak Cuticle Sealer is labeled as a post chemical service acidifier, with a pH of 2.5-3.5. I cannot stress enough the importance of rebalancing the pH of your hair after a chemical service of any kind. Chemicals raise the hair cuticles, which is… -
Battle of the Hard Hold Gels: Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee vs. Beyond The Zone Bada Bing Extreme Hold Gel
9 Apr 2012 | 8:30 amAny curly girl, who wants definition, and the smallest amount of frizz possible knows the importance of products with good hold. I love a hard hold gel, they seem to be the only thing that will give me the hair I want. So what is it that I want? Definition, low frizz factor, volume/body, shine, and curls that will last through the day. I realize that’s asking a lot, especially living where I live. So, on my latest Sally’s excursion I decided to pick up a gel that I’ve read about on NC.com, Beyond the Zone Bada Bing Extreme Hold Gel. The easiest way I can think of to review an extreme… -
Review: Yes To Carrots Nourishing Shampoo and Pampering Conditioner
8 Apr 2012 | 10:04 amDare I say it, I think I found a new HG shampoo (low poo) and conditioner. Now I’m not one to profess my undying love about a product unless I’m serious. When it comes to my hair, I’m serious, dead serious in fact. The most shocking thing is, they’re a drugstore product! Don’t get me wrong, I think there are plenty of great products at the drugstore, but I’m a sort of hair snob sometimes. Anywho, ladies brace yourselves, I’ve fallen madly in love with Yes To Carrots Nourishing Shampoo and Pampering Conditioner. The Yes To Carrots Nourishing Shampoo is more of a low poo, it’s… -
Review: Vanish Color Remover
29 Mar 2012 | 8:00 amI'll be the first to admit, I change my hair color like some women change their handbag. It's a lot, probably every 2-3 months. Now I'm talking about actually changing the color, not doing root touch-ups. My hair has been more colors than I can count, and the only color I can honestly think of that it's never been is black. Most of the time if I'm going from dark to light I'd just bleach and start over. As you can imagine, this takes quite a toll on my hair, and it's certainly been healthier. So a couple months ago I ran across a product called Vanish Color Remover. It has literally changed…

How a chance encounter at Target lead to a blog Feature
13 May 2012 | 1:05 pmJust another random trip to Target, I thought. I had one item to pick up then I'd be on my merry way. Since I was out of town and unfamiliar with this Target's layout, I wandered around a bit before I found what I was looking for. Just as I was walking by the beauty section, I noticed someone pass me. What immediately grabbed my attention was her healthy ponytail that swung slightly from side to side as she walked by. My first thought was to casually walk over to the hair product aisle, where she was standing, to see which items she'd pick up and ask her a few questions about her regimen, and… -
The one thing that all people with healthy hair seem to have in common
7 May 2012 | 5:45 amThere's something that I've been pondering on deeply over the past few weeks. I travel almost weekly and, lately, I've been taking advantage of the idle airport time by doing something constructive. So instead to catching up on emails, or making follow up calls, I've decided to stare at the various heads of hair as they walk by. What I've been looking for, as I stare at these random strangers, are commonalities that can give me clues into achieving healthier hair.I'm happy to report that all of my intense observations has revealed a commonality so obvious, that I'd be a fool… -
Protective Styling = Powerful Progress! A Relaxed Hair Health Feature
29 Apr 2012 | 3:34 amI'm really excited about sharing this post today. Not too long ago, I wrote a post about caring for the hair while protective styling under weaves/wigs. I'm happy to say that miss "pre_med" was doing just fine with her length retaining strategy. Her only concern was regarding… -

In previous posts, I've mentioned the constant battle with acne I've been engaged in ever since I was a youth. This year, the decision has been made to take an aggressive approach on obtaining healthy skin. Ever since the beginning of the year I've focused many of my energies on creating healthy, clear skin. I've invested money on products, I've a followed a defined morning and night time routine, I've shifted my eating habits. All of… -
Hair Food Recipe: Poke Power!
19 Apr 2012 | 7:05 amToday I'd love to share a quick recipe for a dish I've been enjoying ever since I was first introduced to it's deliciousness while on my trip to Hawaii. It's called Poke (pronounced poke-ay) which is relatively easy to prepare (no cooking involved) and it's really yummy. I love sushi and seafood so I gravitated to this dish the moment I first laid eyes on it. I was served Poke as an appetizer but I like to create enough of it to enjoy as a main course. So let's get started, but before I do, I'll inform you that I don't measure anything so I apologize…

Fierce & Fab No Matter What
16 May 2012 | 7:00 amToday's post is going to be a little bit different than what we normally talk about here on The Anti Hair Slave. I mentioned on Twitter a while back that I was starting a Master's level nursing program, well it's started and I'm taking 8 credits, working full time, and juggling all my other responsibilities. I'm sure you all know how life can just swoop in and take over leaving little to no 'me time', well that's exactly what was happening but I had to take a step back and do a few things for myself so I could stay fierce and fab without compromising myself. It's so… -
Beauty Break: Lighten Up with AMBI
15 May 2012 | 7:00 amMy current skin care regimen has a big focus on acne and hyperpigmentation. My teenage years were pretty much blemish free, so this whole adult acne thing is throwing me for a serious loop. The worse part is the hyperpigmentation (dark marks that are left from the breakouts). Sure, you can cover up the spots but flawless skin is the best base for makeup, I'm a firm believer that the driving force behind makeup application should be enhancing your beauty not covering up flaws. When Glam offered the chance to try out the AMBI line I jumped at the chance because I was… -

My latest local pit-stop was to Nori Sushi, a place that always gets rave reviews. I took my brother, who hasn't all the way developed his sushi taste but I like introducing him to new stuff (there's a 10 year age difference and he's like MY baby). Shelli's Secrets to Length Retention
15 May 2012 | 6:51 amby Shelli of Hairscapades Last week, I mentioned that I was getting quite a few questions about what I do/did to get my hair to its current length. Usually when I get asked that question, I’ll point to my regimen post. But, to be honest, that is ever evolving and what I may be doing or using today may be totally different a week or two from now. So, I started to think about the various Tips and Tricks that I’ve shared over the last year. Then, I grouped them into categories of things that I consistently do to retain as much length as I can.Right now, my hair is the longest that…

The Bow Braid | Cute Braided Hairstyles
9 May 2012 | 8:19 pmI am always on the lookout for the next Waterfall Braid-type hairstyle! About two weeks ago, a Twitter fan tweeted us a photo of a very intricately-laced bow braid hairstyle, and I thought the idea was so fun and unique! In fact, it was likely the most creative and cute hairstyle I have seen since the Waterfall Braid! So… I sat down to figure it out, but after many attempts I wasn’t having much luck at all. Close, but nothing worth posting… Another fan, Katrina on Facebook, posted her version along with a link to a low resolution Russian YouTube video showing the exact technique. -

We wish we had time to do all of them, but with six children who are my highest priority… it is difficult to find spare time. What we do find, however, is that there may be a reoccurring theme among the hairstyle requests… We have had quite few Facebook posts or emails asking for hairstyles from The Game of Thrones TV series on HBO. We do not watch HBO, but many fans have sent in photos and I have to admit some of the hairstyles are super cute! … -

Authentic Katniss Braid | Hunger Games Special Guest
17 Apr 2012 | 9:07 pmSeveral months ago we uploaded our 1st version of the Katniss Braid, long before the movie came out. The movie was a blockbuster smash, and everyone was amazed at the hairstyles seen throughout the film! Right after the premier, Linda Flowers, the lead hairstylist on The Hunger Games movie set, began searching the internet to see what people were saying about her hairstyles. In fact, Linda was so amazed at how the Katniss Braid was becoming a “symbol”, so much that teen girls worldwide and their friends were wearing the braid to see the movie in theaters! She found us on YouTube… -
Simple Braid with Micro-Braid Accents | Braided Hairstyles
8 Apr 2012 | 6:15 pmI saw a version of this super-cute micro-braid accented hairstyle on Pinterest last week, and pinned it. Since then, it has received over 330 re-pins. {We tried as hard as we could to find what website the style originated from, to give proper credit, but the original photo was uploaded directly to Pinterest with no tie to a user.} After seeing the photo, my #3 daughter pleaded with me to do a tutorial of this braided hairstyle on her, so we could share with all of you! How can I resist those batting eyelashes??? This hairstyle uses a Simple Side Braid, only I included two microbraids…

Hair Flowers
10 May 2012 | 1:07 pmWhat could possibly be more fitting for SPRING than to throw some fun hair flowers in your hair? NOTHING!!! This is one of those things I tried to figure out a way to do this for so long... and it was one little extra twist I was missing to make these hair pretties happen. I of course learned this at the Peerless show I was at this last weekend. I adore this fun style. Here is a close up of -
The Peerless Show (day two)
8 May 2012 | 1:13 pmDay two was much harder than my day one. I think having my boys there was fun, but challenging. I did go watch more up-do classes. One of which was in the Big Sexy Hair classroom. They teach up do styling as a five step system. I loved that concept. I'd love to take classes through there program. I did try out those cute hair flowers I told you about on my last post. Super cute. I will shoot a -
The Peerless Show (day one)
6 May 2012 | 10:43 pmWhat a busy (hair week) I've had. I graduated this last week. That means I'm one of the few people who have an AAS degree in cosmetology/barbering. I'm not done with my required hours yet, but I am very close!!! Only 100 more to go. That put to be four or five more weeks until I'm 100% legal. I still have my hours to complete and my practical and written state tests to do. I'm so excited that THE -
Our Newest Addition (Part Two)
2 May 2012 | 10:24 amOne of the notes on little C's release paperwork from the hospital was a noted "hip clicking" sound. So at that first visit with our pediatrician she checked out his hips and ordered an ultrasound. We had the ultrasound done when little C was four weeks old. They did an ultrasound on his hips and discovered that he has Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH). This is a chronic condition -

How I Do My Flexi Rods
5 May 2012 | 8:40 amI had a couple requests to explain how I do my Flexi Rod set. Below is a mini picture tutorial as to how I do them. Hope this helps :)Step 1: Moisturize and seal with SCurl No Drip Activator and Wild Growth Oil. (Optional, use foam lotion for longer lasting curls)Step 2: Section off the hair in two (back and front). Get 2 Flexi Rods.Step 3: Wrap the hair around the rod as if you were wrapping a rope around your finger. (Do not use the Flexi Rod as a roller. The curls won't come out nice, this is what I noticed from my personal experience). Bend the Flexi Rod at both ends to secure the hair in… -
Back From Vacation + Trim + Hair Update
30 Apr 2012 | 12:00 pmNo blog posts means ..... Sunshyne is away! LOLIt`s been a while since I`ve blogged (so sorry) but there`s a reason for that. Mid April I was SWAMPED with studying and final exams. I had zero time for myself. A couple days after that, my family and I went off to Varadero, Cuba (1 week) to relax and have some fun in the sun. I had a blast!! The Cuban people are so nice and friendly and the food was delicious! I wish I stayed a little longer :(I came back last week, however, getting back into the routine of things took some time. I`m back on schedule so blogging and doing my hair care routine… -

Flexi Rods On Air Dried Hair
26 Mar 2012 | 1:20 pmThis weekend I tried Flexi rods, after many failed attempts, and this time it came out pretty decent. I tried a different method this time around allowing me to use only 2 Flexi rods to get this style. I moisturized and sealed prior to putting the rods in. I'm going to perfect this style a little more so that it lasts throughout the day (the curls dropped a bit after going outside). I'm definitely going to try this again :) Have you tried Flexi-rods? If so, what's your method? -

I’m Back! (Kind of.)
9 May 2012 | 2:57 pmI’m drowning in laundry (and my kids’ snotty noses), but I wanted to say a quick hello and thank you for all your well wishes for my travels! The past week was…well, I can’t accurately put it into words, but I loved every single minute of it. Dude. The Sarah James Show. Speaking at Mom 2.0. The Versace Mansion. Lunch with Samantha Bee. (Okay, so I was having lunch with two extremely lovely ladies, Catherine Connors and Alisa Volkman, and Sam joined us halfway through. So, it wasn’t like she called me up and asked me to dine with her. But still! SAMANTHA BEE. AT… -

27 Apr 2012 | 3:45 pmMonday morning, I’m leaving California on a little adventure. First stop, New Jersey, where I will get the chance to film my very own talk show at CafeMom Studios. Totally crazy, but super exciting crazy. We’re filming ten episodes devoted to all the things I love to chat about – beauty, style, parenting, travel, fitness, organization, taking care of yourself, and we have some really fantastic guests lined up. I’m really excited. And nervous. But mostly excited. No, maybe nervous. From New Jersey, I’ll be flying straight to Miami for Mom 2.0. I can’t wait! -

Bold Hair Colors
15 May 2012 | 12:02 pmOver the past few weeks, we’ve seen many celebs sporting bold hair colors like bright purple, pink and even fluorescent yellow. This is not a new trend. I actually had purple tips in high school! But bright hues are making a comeback in more ways than one. I must admit, I wasn’t too surprised to see Katy Perry or Rihanna take risks with their hair color, but when prim ‘n proper Lauren Conrad stepped out with bright pink tips I was shocked. Below are some of the styles we’re diggin’. We’re especially big fans of Coco Rocha’s pink curlicues. Still… -
Tropical Vacation Big Hair Survival Guide
30 Apr 2012 | 8:44 pmI just got back from an amazing, beautiful weekend in the Dominican Republic celebrating a friend’s wedding at Casa de Campo. The weather was sticky and hot with 110% humidity. Great beach weather, bad hair weather! It inspired me to put together a PGH survival guide to a tropical vacation. These are some of the products I brought along that came in handy taming the mane. 1. Morocan Oil 2. Lilla Rose Flexi Clip 3. Floppy Sun Hat 4. Aveda Air Control Hair Spray -
How to: Hair Crown
24 Apr 2012 | 6:47 amI’ve seen hair crowns made with braids and my problem with this look is that with thick hair is can turn out looking very Star Wars-esque. You know what I mean? However, SalonCapri’s Lead Stylist and Owner, Nicholas Penna Jr., was able to create a hair crown that looks simple and beautiful. This ‘do is perfect for any special occasion including a wedding – which I happen to be going to this weekend! Choose This, Not That
5 Apr 2012 | 2:20 pmTo brush or not to brush, that is the question! Especially when it comes to PGH. Personally, I rarely brush my hair. Does that sound bad? It’s the truth though. Brushing too much can cause major frizz and make your hair bigger than it already is. Plus, the wrong brush can cause breakage. My advice is to towel dry hair after the shower and then use a brush to detangle. We put two brushes to the test this week – a wide tooth comb by Olivia Garden and a paddle brush by Goody. And the winner is… The wide tooth comb! It removed water and got the knots out better than the paddle…

The "Wave Braid" Hairstyle Tutorial
10 May 2012 | 9:45 amAn Easy Braided Hairstyle This "wave braid" or zig zag braided hairstyle is actually very easy and quick. The braid in the hairstyle photo below was made by using a thicker strand of hair than in the photo above. This braid will look a little bit -

Sidewinder Ribbon Braid Tutorial
26 Apr 2012 | 10:00 amA Unique French Braid Hairstyle With Ribbon This braid is created by using 3 strands of hair and a ribbon, scarf, or piece of fabric woven through the strands. After making this braid a few times, my personal opinion is that it is easier to manage than a regular french braid. If you are having a hard time figuring out a french or dutch braid, this might be an easier alternative. This

Reba McEntire’s Makeup for Small, Close-Set Eyes
14 May 2012 | 12:55 amHer fiery red locks and unique looks make her an unforgettable lady. Reba is aging with style, and uses makeup to look more youthful and balance out her features—most noticeably her small, close-set eyes. Having this eye type can present its challenges when it comes to makeup, but Reba McEntire shows us how to work glamorous makeup while making them look wider–set. In addition to having small and close set eyes, Reba has a very unique shape to her eyes where they are at their widest near the outer corner, rather than the center. To balance this out, she uses smoky dark eye shadow… -
Korrina Rico’s Makeup for Light Eyes and Dark Skin
14 May 2012 | 12:32 amLight eyes and dark skin are such a gorgeous combination on their own; makeup isn’t even needed in most cases. However, if you need some new makeup ideas, look no further than Korrina Rico. Her light green eyes and café latte complexion always look stunning, and the best news is her makeup style is very easy to copy. To start with, Korrina lines her entire eye with a black eyeliner pencil. This makes her green eyes look even more feline (lucky her!) but if you have small or close-set eyes, line the top lash line only. Use a makeup brush or sponge to softly blend out the edges for… -
Jennifer Coolidge’s Va-Va-Volumized Hairstyle
14 May 2012 | 12:09 amJennifer Coolidge is a very successful comedienne, but let’s face it, she’s best known for her role as the ultimate “Mrs. Robinson” from the American Pie series. They couldn’t have chosen a better lady to act as the eternally young and sexy mother that all the teenage boys lust after, and Jennifer is still looking fit and fabulous. Blessed with a curvy figure, feline eyes and full lips, it's only natural that Jennifer tops it all off with super sexy hair. If you love her ‘do and want to try it out at home, here’s how: First of all, you will need to… -
Rachel Weisz’s Makeup for Full Eyebrows
13 May 2012 | 11:32 pmRachel Weisz is known for her glossy dark hair and those fabulous full eyebrows. With thick eyebrows now in vogue again, Rachel is the perfect leading lady from which to take makeup tips from. If you have naturally thick eyebrows, follow Rachel’s makeup techniques and get gorgeous! In this look, Rachel has blended a warm cinnamon eye shadow from her top lid up towards the brows. This gives a dramatic look to the eye, but heavy eyebrows can also create a lot of darkness. To lighten up, use a lighter shade of eye shadow or a highlighter just under the brow line. In this photo, Rachel has… -
Get Dev’s Punky Makeup Style
10 May 2012 | 9:13 pmA refreshing change from bubble-gum pop princesses, Dev has crazy hair, crazy clothes, and crazy makeup to match. If you want to look like Dev, first you need to get a short asymmetrical haircut and add in some purple highlights. Then, you are ready for her makeup. Here’s how to get Dev’s look: Like the lovely Amy Winehouse, Dev is all about the cat eye. However unlike Amy (who was a fan of liquid liner) it looks like Dev has used a powder or pencil to get her cat eye effect. In any case, start with gold and brown eye shadow applied across the upper lid. You can also bring it down…

How to Care for Hair Extensions
10 May 2012 | 5:58 pmHow to care for hair extensions should be part of the initial experience of having hair extensions installed and discussed in depth with the stylist. Everyone that habitually wears hair extensions knows that the key to keeping them looking natural and feeling silky soft is minimizing heat and mechanical stress in addition to increasing moisture content using hair treatment products. Knowing how to care for hair extensions does require as much attention as selecting and installing the right kind of human hair and hair extension attachment method. To get the best value out of the initial… -
Fall/Winter Hair Extension Trends
17 Oct 2011 | 11:19 amHair style trends for Fall and Winter this year showed us Braids and Hair Extensions. Looking at the NY Fashion week runway shows we saw lots of texture and volume using combinations of braiding of own hair, braiding with hair extensions, layering in hair extensions, textured ponytails and what must have been lots of dry shampoo. The braided hair looks were the most fascinating, with different twists, colors and placement. Some are calling this a low maintenance style: A laid back look with a natural windswept appearance and soft frizzy hair. I think every hair stylist out there knows how… -
Does the hair come from dead people??
3 Oct 2011 | 6:14 pmThis is one of our top favorite questions about the origins of our hair extensions. Or perhaps they are questioning our collection methods of the elusive Russian or Eastern European Caucasian virgin hair? By now, most people are educated about the origins of Indian hair and the temple customs of a people that sacrifice their beauty. But when it comes to Caucasian hair and its country status we still get that whispered question. I can practically see their imagination running with images of secret hair collectors dressed in black, sharp shears in hand sneaking into cemeteries. Hair collecting… -
Use Vinegar as a Natural Remedy for Smooth Shiny Hair
27 Aug 2011 | 1:43 pmA great home remedy for shiny hair is a vinegar rinse. Each hair has an outer layer of hair called cuticles. The cuticle is made of overlapping layers of long scales that lie along the surface of each strand of hair. When we shampoo our hair, the shafts open and residual ingredients get trapped underneath it, resulting in ragged uneven hair. How does vinegar help? The properties in vinegar removes shampoo and other product build up underneath that makes hair dull. Most shampoos and soaps are alkaline; vinegar has an acidic property which will control the PH balance in hair. After shampooing,… -
Balancing Liquid Tension to Hair Energy
23 Aug 2011 | 4:20 pmSurface tension is a property of the surface of a liquid. It is what causes the surface portion of liquid to be attracted to a solid surface. Surface energy is the property of a solid. There must be a perfect balance of the two for maximum bonding. Extensions are manufactured hair that goes through a rigorous chemical process that changes the amount of energy on the surface of the hair. Every surface has a measurement of energy and every liquid has a measurement of tension based on ions. Since the surface energy has changed, the surface tension in products needs to be changed to properly…

Applying Liquid Adhesives Like a Pro
11 May 2012 | 3:25 pmSome of our most experienced clients use liquid adhesives to attach their hair systems because they offer a wide range of hold times and very secure bonds. But glues can be intimidating to use and easy to mess up. We’ve seen lots of messes and the same mistakes made over and over again! Applying liquid adhesive can be tricky and challenging to say the least. Some solvent based adhesives that offer an extended bonding time can be really thick and stringy and are hard to apply evenly. Water based adhesives offer their own set of challenges! If they're applied too thick and aren't allowed… -

Full Cap Taping with JRob
24 Apr 2012 | 10:57 amTaping down your full cap hair system isn’t as straight-forward as attaching a partial unit. There are tricky spots—like the nape of the neck and the temples—that seem to wiggle loose whenever they want to. Then there’s the biggest issue: an exposed hairline the whole way around your head! Our Hair Techs answer a lot of tape questions from full cap wearers, so they need to know all about the latest techniques and products. That’s why we asked our friend Jon “JRob” Robertson for a full cap taping demonstration. He happily flew up from sunny Orlando and spent a day working with… -
Tape Tips for Newbies
17 Apr 2012 | 8:59 amWearing hair involves making a lot of decisions. What style, hair color, wave or curl do you want? What base materials do you need to pull off the right mix of appearance and durability? After you design your hair system, the next decision is just as important: How are you going to stick it all to your head? Will you use tape or liquid adhesive? Decisions, decisions, decisions. Most “newbies” start with tape because it’s just easier to work with when you're learning to wear hair. But all hair system tapes are not created equal! There are two really big things to think about. First… -
So Many Tapes, So Little Time
10 Apr 2012 | 10:23 pmOh, how time flies. It feels like just yesterday that our Store held only a small handful of the bestselling hairpiece tapes on the market. Well fast forward to today and our Store now hosts a collection of more than a dozen brands, totaling nearly 300 individual tape products! If you bond your hair system using tape adhesives, choosing can be more overwhelming now than ever before. This month we'll be blogging about tapes and providing tips and resources to help you figure out which tapes to try.
